As I sat behind you in Shul yesterday and watched you put on your tallit for the first time, I didn't know I was witnessing an enormous personal experience. It's a good reminder that each person that takes a seat in our lives has a story.

Roberta Schinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09593485653896410238noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-944049822402301446.post-89278700719129380082013-03-11T19:21:35.121-04:002013-03-11T19:21:35.121-04:00To me the best part is your Dad is beside you on t...To me the best part is your Dad is beside you on this journey!Susie's Blog from Saturnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16948896153146808116noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-944049822402301446.post-63491709124233785322013-03-11T16:45:58.092-04:002013-03-11T16:45:58.092-04:00I have always struggled a bit, well, more than a b...I have always struggled a bit, well, more than a bit trying to find my comfortable place. I read Torah at North Shore when I became a Bat Mitzvah, My heart is connected to the traditional conservative movement, but after marrying a Russian Jew and having two daughters I felt like I needed to try a reform congregation. I still don't feel that it is my perfect place and am most at home where I send Laila to camp- a pluralistic Jewish environmental community. Here in the suburbs there are fewer options and I feel like I will be searching for some time, I wish I had study partners to explore this with!lailamomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05969597928584436727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-944049822402301446.post-86524820746382084582013-03-11T13:45:57.644-04:002013-03-11T13:45:57.644-04:00Good for you, Rachel. Your daughters will thank you for the example you set.

By the way, I didn't have a Bat Mitzvah at all until college, when I had my aliya during Yom Kippur services, which came during Orientation Week. Some Orientation! My first haftarah came some years after that and my first Torah reading was at T and V; I wanted to learn because I wanted to read at my son's Bar Mitzvah, which I did. Fortunately, we have a home at T and V where such learning and growing is actively encouraged. I'll never forget Rabbi Sebert's face when he noticed my tallit, brand new then.

Great advice, not to forget the shecheyanu, both for new clothes and the momentous practice your are embarking on. Yishar Kocheich! And it's a chance to say an extra blessing. My advice: practice the blessing a bit first cuz you are going to tear up. And don't forget to the say the Shehechianu blessing too!
